Frequently asked questions

What to expect from our first session?

The first session is typically focused on getting to know each other and ensuring the client feels safe, supported, and comfortable expressing their emotions without hesitation. During this meeting, we review the client intake and consent form, which they sign before beginning services. This form outlines what to expect from counselling, the counsellor’s role, the cancellation policy, the use of technology, confidentiality, and the specific circumstances in which confidentiality may need to be broken.

We also discuss session fees and explore the client’s goals for therapy. This initial conversation helps build rapport between the counsellor and the client and provides an opportunity to determine whether the therapeutic relationship is a good fit.

How to know when it’s time to seek support?

People often wait until they feel overwhelmed before reaching out, but counselling can be helpful long before things reach a breaking point. You might consider seeking support if:
  • You feel stuck, lost, or unsure about your next steps.
  • Stress, anxiety, or sadness are affecting your daily life.
  • You’ve noticed changes in your sleep, appetite, or energy.
  • Your relationships feel strained, confusing, or difficult to navigate.
  • You’re experiencing a major life transition — even a positive one.
  • You want a space to better understand yourself and your emotions.
You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit from counselling. It’s a place to grow, reflect, and reconnect with yourself.

How to choose a right counsellor for you?

Here are a few questions that can help you decide whether a counsellor is the right fit for you:
  • Do you feel safe, heard, and understood?
  • Does their therapeutic approach align with what you’re looking for?
  • Do they have experience working with the concerns you’re bringing?
  • Is their communication style — warm, direct, gentle, structured — a good match for your preferences?
  • Are practical factors like location, availability, and fees workable for you?
Most counsellors offer a consultation call. Trust your instincts — the right fit should feel comfortable and natural, not forced.
